Finding a balance between fluff and function in my closet is an ongoing battle. It’s never perfect, but through trial and error over the years I’ve learned a few lessons (sometimes the hard way) on how to be more intentional with my purchases.
I love my fair share of bold, funky, vintage, and trendy pieces, but nothing feels better than knowing I have a trusty uniform to fall back on week after week. The term ‘uniform’ almost gets a bad rap sometimes. Why? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with knowing what you feel comfortable wearing and owning things you’ll actually wear. My “uniform” adapts as my style, body, and age, and lifestyle changes (for example, my uniform looked a little different before I became a mother) but for the most part it’s pretty consistent.
Here are 10 things I have been wearing lately on a weekly basis:
Anything from a classic button down to a bell sleeve shirt, I love chambray! Best part is that they are a thrift store staple. I can almost guarantee that you’ll find one on the first or second try. Two of my favorite denim shirts in rotation right now: Old Navy and Philosophy.
Black ankle pants
I wear black ankle pants to the office so much that once I find a pair I love I will buy 2-3 of the same pair. Favorite brands for short girls: Rafaella and Old Navy in Harper.
Large tote bag
I’ve had this bag for five years and it’s still going strong. I use this for my laptop and everything else I need to lug around from day to day like post office packages, etc.
My all time favorite pair: Old Navy boyfriend straight jeans. They don’t make this exact style anymore, but they have plenty of similar styles.
Tummy tuck leggings
I got these MRE Tummy Tuck leggings at a local boutique and let me tell you, I’ve never owned a pair of leggings more durable. I wear them multiple times a week to lounge around the house or run a quick errand. I’ve washed them dozens of times and they still feel brand new.
Three staple necklaces
I own a lot of statement jewelry but the three pieces I wear repeatedly week after week are: a custom necklace with my daughter’s name (etsy); long bee pendant necklace (Allie M. Designs); and a simple bee charm (amazon). If you couldn’t tell, I like bees.
I wear them to work with ankle pants, with dresses, jeans – everything. I thrifted these Charles David mules for $3 and have a backup pair saved on Poshmark just in case I wear them out!
Nothing saves the day quite like a pair of nude flats. To keep my feet from looking bare, I always look for nude flats that have a little extra flare – but not too much because I want them to still be neutral. So I look for styles with perforation, bows, pointed toes, or maybe leather accents.
I feel so lost when I don’t have a pair of black flats in my closet. I will not sacrifice comfort for style when it comes to black flats. They MUST be comfortable because I wear them all the time. I try to find comfy ones that are also chic like a pointed-toe.
Black crew neck blouse
I got this top for 75 cents years ago at a thrift store and I can honestly say I wear it at least once a week to the office. It’s a brand I don’t usually buy (Chaus) but the fit is just perfect.
